FAQs About Training

Am I going to get the opportunity to watch/ride/work with my horse during a training session to help me understand how to work with him after I take him home?
Yes.  Owners are very welcome and encouraged to be as much a part of the training process as possible.  Once your trainer feels that you can directly participate in sessions with your horse safely, we strongly encourage you to get hands-on time with your horse and schedule a lesson.  This is an essential step and is highly recommended for your success with your horse.   Your trainer will help you learn skills and tactics necessary to continue growing your partnership with your horse.  If you want to observe training sessions, it is your responsibility to call to find out when your horse is going to be worked with, and the trainer will try to schedule a time that works well for both of you.
Are lessons included in the cost of training?
Full-time training includes one hands-on lesson per week with your horse.  Part-time training does not include lessons.  If you would like a lesson with one of our veteran lesson horses, regular lesson rates apply.
Am I welcome to watch training sessions with other clients’ horses?
Yes.  Just ask for the current schedule and you are welcome to watch any session you like.
Is boarding included in the training rates?
No.  Boarding is a separate charge.  For our boarding price list, Click Here.
Are helmets required when I ride my horse in training sessions?
Yes.  Helmets are required at all times when mounted.
Can I come out to see my horse at any time?
Yes.  You are welcome to visit your horse anytime during the stable’s hours of operations, provided that the stable rules are followed.
Can I work with my horse if I come out when the trainer is not around?
Your trainer needs to develop consistency in the horse’s training and for that reason needs to be present to make sure that your horse is being handled in a manner consistent with the training method.  As you and your horse progress, you will be given more responsibilities as you learn how to take on the “trainer” role when you take your horse home.  Your responsibilities or tasks can be completed during training sessions and will be assigned to you.  You are welcome to work on your tasks with or without your trainer, but you are encouraged to practice at a time when the trainer can be reached to answer questions or help you if you become stuck.
What do I need to bring when my horse comes in for training?

All of the equipment that you currently use or intend to use on your horse needs to be brought with your horse to training.  This is necessary so that tack fit can be evaluated.  If something doesn’t fit or work well, your trainer can help you find something that would work better.
Where can I store my equipment and tack?

Windfall Equestrian Center has a tack area where you will be provided a space for a saddle and bridle.  If you wish to bring a tack trunk, you can purchase one by Clicking Here.  No other tack trunks are permitted due to storage space limitations.
What do we do if we have an appointment during inclement weather?

We restrict riding in severe thunderstorms, winter storm warnings, or tornado watches or warnings.  If any of these conditions exist, we will reschedule our appointment for a different day.  Our riding area and stables are heated to 45 degrees in the winter months and stays comfortably cool in the summer.
When is my training payment due?
Payment is due in advance when your horse arrives at the farm.  Every monthly payment after that is due on the 1st of the following month.
Do I need to give you my original Coggins test?
No.  You can keep your original, but we do need to see the original to verify authenticity, and we need to keep a copy on file for our records.  We cannot accept horses for boarding or training without a current (within calendar year) negative Coggins test.  To comply with state and federal regulations, you may need a current (within 30 days) health certificate to trailer your horse over state lines.  A health certificate is not required by the stable.
How do you manage adding new training horses to your pasture herds?
We are very careful that all new horses are introduced slowly into herds that we believe they will fit into without too much fuss.  We also keep our herds relatively small, which makes the transitions easier.
Does my horse need insurance to be in training?

No.  However, if your horse is NOT insured, and something happens to him while he is here, you cannot claim that your horse is worth over $3,000.  If you believe that your horse is worth an excess of that amount, it is recommended that you insure him.
Do you require specific vaccinations to enter training?
Yes.  You can get a full list of all requirements for coming in for boarding by Clicking Here.
