Turnout
Although every horse at Windfall Equestrian Center has a stall, we believe that horses are healthiest when they get as much turnout and social interaction as possible. When the weather is unfavorable, they have a warm barn with a bedded stall to call home. When it’s nice out, we love to see our horses playing outside and getting exercise. This allows us to keep our horses healthy and happy while offering top-notch care for a more affordable cost to you. Small group paddocks vary in size and accommodate groups from 2 to 6 horses. Horses are generally separated into groups of mares and geldings, although exceptions sometimes occur with a few groups of mixed mares and geldings. Other groups usually include horses with metabolic issues, senior horses, and youngsters.
Windfall Equestrian Center offers individual paddocks, small group paddocks, and pastures. Although occasional nips, bites and little kicks are common, we will separate horses if fighting has become a safety issue. We take great care to select a paddock or pasture for your horse where fighting or arguments between horses will be minimized. If you would like to request a change to your horse’s paddock or pasture arrangement, please make a note to the stable management on the stable message board. If the stable management would like to make a change to your horse’s paddock or pasture arrangement, we will either call you directly, or leave a note on your horse’s stall.
Individual paddocks are reserved for stallions or horses that are unable to be paired with other horses for other reasons. We encourage owners to provide their horses with as much social interaction with other horses as possible, so this is usually a last option for horses with injuries or other issues that cannot be resolved when the horse is with a group. Individual paddock turnout is an extra $50 per horse per month. Horses with short-term injuries, however, are welcome to use the individual turnout areas if they are not already reserved by a boarder. To prevent injury, it is our policy to take halters off during turnout.
During the winter months, winter blankets are recommended, but may be required if your horse is unable to keep warm during turnout. Appropriate, waterproof and well-fitting blankets in good repair are the responsibility of the horse’s owner.
During the summer months, we recommend fly masks with ear covers for horses with clipped ears, and fly protection clothing for horses who tend to sunburn. Pest repellent is recommended for each horse and should be labeled and kept on the horse’s stall.
